FAQ

What is the capacity of the secondary containment?

The standard Insta-Dike utilizes a 5” high platform that is 12’ x 64”. The containment sides are twelve inches high.  We rate this as a 4800-gallon capacity.  This allows for minor splashing and the displacement of the tanker tires.  The federal code requires containment of the largest compartment of the tank truck.  Typical tanker compartment sizes vary in different sections of the country, as well as the overall length of trucks.  (EPA regulations do not require anticipated rainfall to be considered when sizing loading rack secondary containment.  Your engineer should check with local codes in your area.)  We can vary the Insta-Dike dimensions to meet your individual needs.

What site preparations are needed?

The Insta-Dike requires a flat concrete base pad, 2 feet wider and 4 feet longer than the Insta-Dike frame.  A 20-amp 110-volt single-phase circuit is needed for the hydraulic pump.  Oil supply lines may be installed above the 12” sidewalls or through the concrete base with a standard spill bucket.

How much space is required?

The space required is the size of the base pad plus room to alignment the tanker for entering and exiting the Insta-Dike.  The Hydraulic pump requires a 3’ x 3’ space.

What are the assembly steps?

1.)               Extend fill pipes to the Insta-Dike location.

2.)               Install the concrete base pad.

3.)               Assemble the Insta-Dike frame and sides.

4.)               Install the membrane, drain and concrete reinforcing rods.

5.)               Install the end ramps by inserting hinge pins.

6.)               Pour the concrete floor.

7.)               Install the hydraulic pump, valves, cylinders and lines.

8.)               Connect power to the hydraulic pump.

Does installation require on-site welding?

The Insta-Dike comes as a kit that bolts together.  No welding is required.  Anyone that can understand how to assemble a bicycle should have no problem with the assembly of our system.  Heavy parts may require assistance when lifting.

Where does the rainwater from the drain go?

The system drains out onto your existing drive area.  No underground drains or piping are required.

What is typical installation time?

The Insta-Dike can be assembled, on a prepared base, in one day.  The liner, reinforcing rod and concrete can be installed the second day.  The hydraulic system and electric power can then be installed as the concrete cures.  Refer to your concrete contractor for curing times that will vary with concrete mixes, additives and weather conditions.

What permits are required for an Insta-Dike installation?

Rules vary widely.  Check with your local government.

How long does it take to operate the system?

The operation time will vary with the system configuration, temperature and the length and size of the hydraulic lines; but a properly configured system should take approximately 2 minutes to operate.

How do I clean snow off?

The Insta-Dike can be plowed with a truck-mounted plow, only the 12” end ramps must be hand shoveled.

How are transfer hoses protected?

The EPA requires transfer hoses to be included in the spill protection plan.  Bringing the fill connection points into the Insta-Dike fulfills that requirement.

What if the pump is left on?

The pump is on a five-minute timer.

How long will an Insta-Dike last?

The Insta-Dike is constructed with ½” steel plate sides, ¾” steel end ramps and a concrete floor.  With minimal maintenance, it should give many years of trouble-fee service.

Is the hydraulic pump ok so close to the oil tanks?

The hydraulic pump is all built to explosion proof standards.

What do I do if the concrete cracks?

An oil resistant membrane liner is installed before the concrete is poured into the Insta-Dike frame.  This provides an additional layer of safety in a spill event. The liner also isolates the concrete floor from the concrete base pad so cracks do not propagate through both concrete layers.  Minor cracks in the Insta-Dike floor should be caulked with a butyl material.

If a spill occurs, does it need to be reported?

Most spills never reach the environment or leave your control.  They are therefore not technically reportable spills.  Just pump out the Insta-Dike from the drain port and clean up with absorption materials.

How do I purchase an Insta-Dike system?

The Insta-Dike system can be currently purchased directly from Prevent A Spill, Inc.  We hope to create a dealer network during 2006.  Please contact us if you would be interested in purchasing an Insta-Dike or becoming a dealer.
