INSTA-DIKE

The INSTA-DIKE is an innovative solution to protecting the tankers at your loading rack against oil spills. The Environmental Protection Agency has mandated that non-transportation facilities that have over 1320 gallons of above ground oil storage shall have a Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plan (Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 112 (40CFR112)). The INSTA-DIKE can provide the loading rack secondary containment required as part of your SPCC Plan.

The INSTA-DIKE consists of a 5” platform, set on a level concrete surface, with 12” ramps that lift hydraulically to form a dike around the tank truck. The dike is designed to contain the oil from the largest tank truck compartment, as mandated by the EPA. The INSTA-DIKE system may be ordered in the standard 12’ x 64’, 4,600 gallon capacity with 2 operable ends or to your size specifications.

Piping from the tanks can be brought over the side of the INSTA-DIKE, with a spill catch box, or through the INSTA-DIKE floor, with spill buckets, thus completely enclosing the hoses within the containment area. The platform’s floor gently slopes to a central drain. Melting snow or rainwater flow out the drain onto the facility’s drive, when the ramps are down. Lifting the ramps hydraulically closes the drain, completely containing any spill. If a spill occurs, the driver connects a hose to the drain valve, opens the valve and pumps the oil out. We recommend the optional unloading valve to be added to your system. The valve closes the pipe used to unload the truck until the system is activated. This will insure the use of the secondary containment by the tanker driver.

The INSTA-DIKE arrives at your site as a simple component system, ready for installation. A steel frame is bolted together and leveled. The central drain, an oil impervious membrane and extended fill ports are installed in the interior of the steel frame. The frame acts as forms for pouring a reinforced concrete floor. The ramps are installed by simply inserting stainless steel hinge pins. The hydraulic system completes the installation with a hydraulic pump remotely mounted in your building or a waterproof cabinet on your site. Hydraulic controls are mounted next to the platform, allowing the tanker driver to observe and operate the INSTA-DIKE system.

The INSTA-DIKE is designed to be a simple, reliable and cost effective system. There are no electrical components causing concerns of ignition of fumes. Operation is fast and simple for the tanker operator. The time to activate/deactivate the system is approximately 2 minutes. An oil release never reaches the environment and is therefore not a reportable spill, saving the filing of reports and cleanup costs.

The INSTA-DIKE is manufactured by Prevent A Spill, Inc., an innovative company addressing the environmental issues of today’s oil industry.
